Board of Control for Cricket in India will announce its final 15-man squad for February’s World Cup on 17 January, 2011. This was revealed by a BCCI official on Friday.
“The selection committee is to pick the World Cup squad on the 17th at Chennai,” said the official.
The selection panel, headed by Krishnamachari Srikkanth, will meet on Monday to trim its 30-member preliminary squad to a list of 15 as per the International Cricket Council’s regulations for the mega cricketing event.
The ICC World Cup 2011 will be the tenth episode of cricket world cups. It will be jointly hosted by three South Asian Test cricketing nations. India is also one of the three World Cup hosts, the other two being Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The quadrennial event kick-starts in Dhaka on 19 February and will run until 4 April.
India have been placed in Group B which also includes co-hosts Bangladesh. The other five teams of the group are England, South Africa, West Indies, Ireland and Netherlands.
India will feature in the opening match of the World Cup against Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh on 19 February.
But before the start of the main event, Dhoni’s men are scheduled to play two warm-up matches against New Zealand and defending champions Australia.
So far, only three of the total 14 World Cup participating teams have announced their final squads for the event. These three are Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Netherlands. Australia is expected to announce its final-15 on 19 January.
